Your Adaptation

Blair Richwood offers highly-specialized development services for the manuscript, novel, non-fiction work, play, musical, article or short story -- adapted into feature Outline or Treatment formats.  WGAw Minimums apply.

Your Adaptation Choice

This process is tailored to each project and client.  A preliminary phone interview or meeting should clarify your objective, perspective, and target audience for the adaptation.  The consultation includes the Adaptation document and Story Meetings as needed.  Pitching the Adaptation is also available.

The Adaptation Outline

Once your order is placed and your material is received, a phone interview is conducted to determine your objective for the consultation, and you'll be asked some questions that will guide the service.

The Beat Sheet
With your goal in mind, the material is read and an Outline of the best adaptation for your purpose is crafted from it.  For a feature, you'll receive a Beat Sheet in the three-act structure, complete with all the adaptable characters, scenes, locations, relationships, and conflicts that the material offers.  For most adaptations, however, it is generally necessary to combine certain elements, switch the prominence of the inner monologue to the action of the B-story plot, and condense or reset some time periods.  It may also require invented material to fulfill necessary criteria.

For a TV Movie, the outline will fit the seven-act structure, with the same points to apply.

Your  material is returned to you with an Outline of a proposed adaptation that suits your objective, giving you an extra tool in your effort to convey the literary material to another medium.

Your Follow-up Story Meetings
After you review your Outline, we schedule a telephone appointment to answer any questions you (or your writer) may have.  We will examine options, raise additional ideas, and discuss the next step in the development process.  This may be a conference call, and may be repeated as necessary.

The Adaptation Treatment

Once your order is placed and your material is received, a two hour meeting is scheduled to discuss your objective for the material, the market and this development process.

The Blueprint
Your material is translated into a professional Treatment of the appropriate length, illustrating the proposed adaptation in prose, written in a tone to reflect the genre and the intended medium.

For a feature, you'll receive an introduction, character descriptions and a story in the three-act structure. The Treatment includes all the adaptable characters, scenes, locations, relationships, and conflicts that the material offers.  For most adaptations, however, it is generally necessary to combine certain elements, switch the prominence of the inner monologue to the action of the B-story plot, and condense or reset some time periods.  It may also require invented material to fulfill necessary criteria.

For a TV Movie, the Treatment will fit the seven-act structure, with the same points to apply.

Your  original material is returned to you with a Treatment of a proposed adaptation that suits your objective, giving you an extra tool in your effort to convey the literary material to another medium.

Your Follow-up Story Meeting
After you review your Treatment, we schedule a telephone appointment to answer any questions you (or your writer) may have.  We will examine options, raise additional ideas, and discuss the next step in the development process.
